Caring
I am hearing "you're not my mom" a lot more lately than I did before... I wish I didn't sound like such a nag all the time but honestly, I care too much about you to just stand idly by while you screw yourself up over and over again!
I don't care if you call me your mother, a nag, a pain in the ass, self-righteous, over-stepping-my-bounds or anything else you can come up with. I am not going to stop loving you. I am not going to stop holding you accountable to the stupid, self-destructive decisions you sometimes make.
I don't think you're always dumb, otherwise I probably wouldn't be friends with you. But you are starting to make SILLY CHOICES and I am not going to let you off the hook. I'll be here when you get hurt or when you need to talk or need someone to pick you up.
I hope you'll feel the same way about me when I hit those stupid decisions kay?

Is it really knowledge?
The latter group I have difficulties with... things like "post-colonial reasoning" and "dominant understandings" sound silly to me. It sounds like people sitting around and making shit up.
Now I respect the fact that the people who use and understand these phrases are much smarter and more educated than I am, they have more world experience and probably have a far more mature outlook on life. However I can't get behind the idea of "abstracting to higher and higher levels", when do we stop abstracting and interpreting and gleaning and actually do something with it? I think my dislike of this type of knowledge has a few causes; my age (infallibility of youth and all that), my inexperience with academia, and my need for action! I like doing things, not pontification about the underlying principles and motivations thereof.
This probably makes me a stupider person because I do not appreciate the art of abstracting from ideas already present and regurgitating new knowledge, but I just don't have the patience for it!
Alright, rant over. Back to studying...

Liberalism vs Conservatism
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs.
The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.
Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?”
She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over.”
Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.”
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, “That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!”
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.”
If anyone has a better explanation of the difference between conservative and liberal or progressive or neocon I'm all ears.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!
If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)
-thanks Dad!
Reflections on Academia
Well the new house is lovely, I have fantastic roommates and we all get along splendidly so thank God for that!
My classes are interesting, Microeconomics, Spanish, Writing, Critical Thinking (or Logic) and Statistics. I'm enjoying them all (either for content or the friends that I share the class with) however something I am NOT enjoying is the blatantly obvious biases that my professors hold! My economics professor made a derogatory comment about the army (which was based on a very old stereotype that no longer applies) and my logic professor continually makes snide remarks about well-known Conservative politicians and church. At least in high school the teachers tried to keep their views to themselves and not influence us too much, I guess this attitude does not apply to university professors...
I have made some new friends, one of which wants to become an environmental lawyer so he can stick it to big oil companies (he and I have plenty to talk about ;)) and a few others in my various classes.
I have noticed an alarming lack of pants on campus! Being stuck behind those who have difficulties walking faster than the flow rate of molasses I notice that the "tights-as-pants" trend is fast becoming an epidemic. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? Put some pants on. Put some PANTS on. Larry has the right idea!
Another thing is smoking. Who still smokes here in the 21st century? There is a plethora of research to show that the benefits of smoking DON'T EXIST. Yet the stairs in front of school still house those dedicated ignoramuses, committed not to let fear or common sense stand in the way of them pumping their lungs full of carcinogens. We salute you brave idiots!
Those are my current reflections on academia, I'm sure there will be more!
Apple is asking for your trust...
Am I the only one who finds it weird that I am supposed to "trust the intelligence of the keyboard"? The really weird part is how accurate that pointer is, I have an older generation iTouch and its true, in order to type fast you have to let the iTouch correct it for you otherwise it just takes too much time. The terminology describing that occurrence just startled me, I have to trust my iPod to help me type... just rubs me the wrong way you know?The iPhone keyboard accelerates your typing because it tracks what you type, then suggests words, corrects spelling, and inserts punctuation for you. The trick is to just type away and trust the intelligence of the keyboard.
Litra-ture *said in snobby accent*
So I've stumbled across a few problems; the first of which being that if and when I do have children (be they the fruit of my own loins or someone else's), I will not know if they love reading until 5ish... give or take a year or two. At that point they will be WAY too old to abandon! I'll have a firmly established attachment to them and they will be all the harder to dump on an orphanage/church's doorstep with a note!
Another problem, I will likely have accumulated such a vast collection of books by that point that bringing children into my home will be downright dangerous. They could be crushed by a falling bookcase or develop spinal injuries by sleeping on stacks of books because I have no room for their bed! How awful of a mother would I look if that happened?! Pretty freaking awful.
Furthermore, my children will have no time for formal education because they will be too busy reading all the books I read and loved when I was their age and therefore feel that they should read and love. Which means I'll have to homeschool them. Now my abundance of books will help at that point in teaching my children but with my having to buy more books to supplement their learning and NOT growing into PONTIs will just exacerbate the problem of it being a treacherous environment for a child!
So after careful weighing of the pros and cons, I've decided children will demand FAR too much of me and therefore should be avoided at all costs. Sorry imaginary rugrats, we had a good run but my professed adoration of the written word will trump you.
You're SOL sparky
I actually had to stifle a snigger at his proposal to create 3 all-white republics in South Africa where blacks are allowed only as guest workers. What are you going to do, have a little piece of cardstock painted the darkest shade of white you'll allow and hold that up to the face of all potential inhabitants? What about the people who have a black parent but by some recessive genetics still look white? How far back are you going to look at lineage in order to determine "how white" someone is? One generation? Two? Three?
The problem with racial profiling like that is you can't make policies around it. Pigments are subjective. I look whiter than most white people simply because I am Nordic in descent. Does that make my friend of Slavic descent less white?
The concept of racism is SO lost on me. Discriminate against someone based on their politics or their favourite baseball team or their car. Don't discriminate based on something as silly as skin colour; genetically predetermined and unchangeable from conception.
People are such colossal ignoramuses sometimes!
I get that way back when people thought your skin was black because you'd sinned or something and if you were good enough God would change you back to white. But we know better now! Science has proven that NO one can control what skin colour they are unless they pull a Michael Jackson! DUH.
Judge someone on something they are actually responsible, not something contrived that they had no hand in. Honestly... *skakes head*
Zhen
He said it himself!
"The mind, it boggles." Is just SUCH a funny phrase to me :) I giggle every time I read it! I's amoosed.
So... I'm not sure what I think of Ann Coulter right now. Obviously I like her more than all the other Liberal pundits/authors/talk show hosts/tv shows/celebrities/politicians in respect to her views. But I can't say as I agree in her racist attitude towards the Middle East, I would HATE to be stereotyped along with the Catholic priests molesting people or the KKK being all white-supremacy-ey because they are not an accurate representation of my beliefs and the radicals are not an accurate representation of joe-regular-muslim guy who says his prayers and loves his family.
But it is difficult not to judge people who let this INSANE group of reactionary assholes who are trying to take the Middle East back in time to enslave their women, murder the infidels and live in an effed up society. Its just mind boggling. If the Taliban had not been given the chance to give their grassroots effort some power perhaps they would not be able to murder people who don't help them or bomb European subway lines or stalk Danish cartoonists. I am not blaming them, its hard to say no to people who are offering to make your life a better one when you've just watched the Russians pull away and leave the country in disarray. But I also can't really blame the people who judge them. They are harbouring murderous, unstable, completely insane guys who are sending their women and children as suicide bombers. Its not right.
Then again, your average joe-muslim-guy who moved to Canada to give his family a better life and does NOT support the Taliban or Islamic extremism should not be heckled for his skin colour and religious beliefs.
Granted its hard to gauge how sympathetic the guy behind you in line for groceries is to terrorists. People don't respond favourably to that kind of questioning in most circumstances :p
P.S. my apologies if the discordant manner in which this post was written is confusing. I didn't edit and polish so much as type it all out before I lost interest and forgot what I was trying to say :p
Zombie Twin Barbi!
I googled more pictures of them and honestly...
Other than the rather obvious T&A they've got going on (which is quite frankly terrifying, do they lose balance easily because of the top weight?) I cannot fathom why people found them attractive.
However I am not a man OR a lesbian therefore I can't really be called upon to judge objectively :P but seriously, those boobs could kill someone.
Phew, glad we got that cleared up
...
No. Not really.
Seriously? Thats what people make their livelihood doing? Writing about the sexual orientation of various celebrities? *sigh*
Get off your ass
And I'm sorry but world leaders are strongly condemning something? As opposed to moderately condemning something? I want to see stuff blown up! I am absolutely serious here, 38 people lost their lives today because two women thought it would be a good idea to throw their lives away and take as many people as possible with them. Why aren't more people outraged by this?! I want action. I want world leaders to stop strongly condemning things and start getting pissed off. I want them to send agents into Chechnya and find the culprits' leaders and throw them in jail or hang them or something. Just do something! Stop sitting around and condemning stuff, grow a spine.
I know I know, its been another while
Why thank you ;)
Word of the Day
Ghastly - it just makes me smile when I say it! And it totally encompasses my feelings on certain subjects. Polygamy? Ghastly. Liberals? Ghastly. Tights as pants? Uber ghastly.
Yep, this guy is SOOOO my new hero "May amoeba evolve enough wit to hate you" :)
I love this not just because it defends Ann Coulter (which not many people are brave enough to do) but because it is so well written! Seriously, someone who can mention fossil fuel substitution, the founding fathers, amoeba, and offal-eating insects totally gets my love.
Holy Man. Angry eyes much? I get the whole defending your team thing and whatnot but wow.
I can't be the only one who finds this ironic and amusing. But just in case I am; rent a sense of humour!
But why are the pants gone?!
Where are her pants?
And hers?
After more careful examination I believe that the second video perhaps features a girl wearing flesh tones pants. But really, why take the chance of someone mistaking you for being pantless?!
My name is Zhen and I am a FIRM believer in pants.
Sad face :(
There's a Tory MP in Quebec?!
So anyways, how long do you think before May sets up re-education camps for climate change deniers? I'm guessing 10 years. If that.
How long is a "long history" anyway? Did anyone ask? He's been representing Beauce for 25 years so yeah I guess that could be where the long comes from... Interesting.
just personal stuff
I miss some people right now. Its hard when you decide you can't talk to someone because you know they're bad for you but you always just enjoy each other's company so much and... Yeah its difficult to let that go.
I am loving my Thursday nights group thing, its a bunch of graduated kids who get together to discuss world events from a Christian perspective and I love it. I'm learning so much and connecting really well to the people around me.
I love it when my guy friends say I'm like a little sister to them and that they are concerned for me because I don't have a big brother so these guys are the closest I'll ever get.
I wish I had more direction
My toes hurt.
Good friends are hard to find. Even harder to keep...
Sorry for the mellow navel gazing tonight guys, I'm feeling very contemplative.
Baffling
its a really excellent word, makes you smile, makes you feel a bit better about being too stupid to understand whatever it is that's baffling you.and its got the fun-to-say factor =)
If you don't have ovaries don't even bother reading this. Seriously. You'll just be like "wtf?"
Yeah that's it. Pretty pointless post I know but what can I say? If you're still reading this and you didn't have ovaries before you started reading; you probably do now. Listen better next time loser.
I know you are but what am I?
Hmm. That one's difficult. Because I hang around with a lot of people who are very nice and very considerate of other people's needs but who have very different morals than I do. Now whether or not that is having a significant impact on my moral compass only time will tell. I know that I do want to be a nice, considerate person but at the expense of my integrity? Because a lot of the people I know who it seems do have their values in order can be quite insufferable to spend time with. maybe I need new friends who are fun to hang out with AND have good moral compasses...
I just realized how horribly judgemental I sound in this post, i do love my friends a great deal, but I worry sometimes that I made bad influencing friends. we'll see how this turns out.
Disney = love
I think out of the Disney princess ones my favourites are Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin because those girls actually fall in love with the princes. Cinderella and Snow White just marry their princes because they're Prince Charming. Which I must say is rather lame.
Although come to think of it, some of you may view my love for Disney movies rather lame. But thats your problem =p
Finality
Post-secondary, while terrifying in it's own right, provides a bit of a cushion for students. They're not technically in the "real world", they are still ensconced in academia and fairly secluded from the pressures of the rest of the world. I am not, by any means, downsizing the amount of stress and work that goes into University, I know its hard! But working for a year, or more, is a bit more terrifying in that there is no "next year" to retake a course. Its real life. If you don't get it right the first time you need to make your own second chances, you can't ask for a redo on the course. I am embarking on my life. Not making another detour to another school. Please; people who are in university who read this, do not be offended by my opinions. I am just stating my view, you probably have a completely different one.
Its scary.
non-lethal ghosts
Work is going very well though, its nothing long term but I have been selling lots of clothes lately and my manager actually told me that I am one of her stronger sellers. :D I know it sounds inconsequential compared to, you know other stuff. But it makes me happy :)
Oh! I just remembered why non-lethal ghosts is the title :p
I've decided my stock room is haunted! By ghosts who just want to be noticed :) so they cut me with something just sharp enough to leave a mark but not quite sharp enough to do any real harm or to actually hurt, they just want attention!
Moral of the story? Be nice to your non-lethal stock ghosts or they might to decide to get your attention with a machete :)
I saw Julie and Julia this evening and really enjoyed it, course if you've seen the trailers you'll understand why I was seized by the overwhelming compulsion to blog =p i think I enjoyed the movie so much because everyone was so sincere. They were passionate be supremely believable, maybe thats because it was based on a true story and bot just fabricated out of somebody's head which can sometimes result in fairly ridiculous movies. I really respected Julie's ambition to really accomplish something though, she was aware that at that point in her life she was simply getting by. I wrote an essay about ambition the other day and in it I wrote that ambitious people are not necessarily driven to conquer the world but simply to strive for more than what is handed to them. Julie kind of does that, she set a goal and fulfilled it, not for any more gain than that of bettering herself and learning. I'd like to do something like that. Not exactly like that of course, I don't derrive nearly the same joy out of cooking as either ladies did.
We may see more about this later...
My birthday is coming up :) I am still undecided on the whole "birthday party" topic as of yet. I may do nothing at all or I may do something small.
I feel confident that this will be a year of much growing for me, even more so than the previous years I think because i am starting to figure out the kind of person I want to be later on in life, this should be interesting...
Life stuffs
I've been trying to find a second job lately, I already have one lined up for the summer but two would be optimal. I start at the one tomorrow :) just hostessing and bussing but hey, once I'm older I can waitress.
Things seem to be going alright lately... Parents are working and happy with that. I'm working and I hope I'll be happy with that. I get to sleep in most of the time :) My friends are doing pretty good although I really can't wait until I get my license and my parents let me drive to see them cuz they're too busy to drive me right now...
My room is almost set up, few more nails in the wall and I'll be all set...
Well this is getting kinda rambly so I guess I'll be done now... I'll write something more pithy later ;)
Raunchy Italian Dudes
I mean, its partly her fault for marrying him cuz he's a creep, but then there's the whole "I need to impress a good, respectable woman so she'll marry me and then I can do whatever the hell I want" syndrome that some politicians and other old dudes experience. Its disturbing...
Man, I think Raitt is the new Ruby Dhalla cuz seriously, this chick is NOT having a good week. Isotopes are sexy, I totally agree, but saying that to anyone other than like... a super understanding spouse or sister was a baaaaaad idea.
And another election?! Can't we just be confident in the Tories for another year or two? They're trying to deal with a recession, that isn't their fault, cut them some slack. Lets not throw another several hundred million dollars into a freaking election when we're trying to pull bailout money out of thin air. Honestly, shake your head around people, what does it sound like? eeeeemmmmppppttttyyyyy.
Just in case you were considering this...
And yeah... I'm officially allergic to cats and dogs. My eyes swell, my nose gets stuffed, I cough, I cry, its ugly. If I ever want to spend time with pets not scaly or submerged in water or both, I have to take an anti-histamine, a decongestant and eye drops. All two hours in advance. Its just not worth it lol. Unless I go horseback riding :) cuz that would totally be awesome.
Its what all the cool kids are doin...
I've been muchly consumed with French lately and I am pretty much swamped in it all day today and tomorrow much to my chagrin.
I cut my hair! It used to be halfway down my back and now its a cute little faux bob that goes only to my chin :) I'm not pretty anymore, just cute lol.
I've finished reading Mississippi Jack Being an Account of the Further Waterborne Adventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, Fine Lady, and the Lily of the West by L. A. Meyer. If you think it sounds ridiculous you'd not be far off but it is pretty much the most entertaining series I've ever read (save for HP and Unfortunate Events (though those do become dreadfully dreary...) and Twilight and some other books) (but these definitely rank high on the list!) (I've been doing so much french lately that when I typed "de" I knew it wasn't quite right but didn't necessarily see the problem with leaving it as-is... I'm becoming quite the little froggy)
I'm enjoying my new house however without the use of a larger mattress at my disposal I've been resigned to slumbering atop a floor bound little single mattress with no bed frame to speak of (thats the "pity her" cue) ;)
Apparently Cabinet Ministers don't do enough housekeeping, creepy old Italian men don't grow their trees quite high enough to be sheltered from paparazzi taking shots of their nethers and film stars' sadomasochistic tendencies turn out to be the death of them. Its a rather twisted world we live in eh?
Cheers all,
Zhen
Moving and Grad and Stupid Fish
Aaaand I graduated :DDDDDD In a pretty dress and way to much make up (I think) and heels and with my best friend and it was great. I walked the stage in my super awesome robe (and no make up... surprisingly no cameras broke ;)) and then took pics with my family cuz I love them and then we went to the restaurant I used to work at woot! I saw my coworkers and they hugged me and didn't get mad when I got my own creamer from the back (sorry guys lol...) and it was AWESOME.
Then the banquet was Saturday and I got all gussied up with make up and hair and a dress and pashmina and heels and it was good. Food kinda sucked but there was tons of people so I took multiple photos with pretty much EVERYONE I knew haha. It was great...
Ok DUDE! My fish are retarded. Honestly. I think they have mental deficiencies. Either that or they hate me. Or they want to be Nemo. Cuz they just float in their tank and look dead until you move the tank and they're all "damn it! She totally screwed up my act!" and then they're all pissed off for awhile. Then they pretend they're dead again. My fish are screwed up...
Although, one of them is named Rosencrantz (Guildenstern was my second fish but he died a little while ago... fulfilling half the prophecy) so maybe he wants to join his buddy...
Dunno what's with my little sister's fish though. His name is Sammy. Maybe he's just f*cked up in the head. He has no excuse. My fish has an excuse :p
Fridays rock
Then we played grounders on the huge school playground and played on the tire swings and all acted like four year olds again :)
Next stop, Dennys for pancakes!!! Avec strawberries and whipcream mmmmm....
And I totally almost beat lindsay in arm wrestling haha.
And last but not least, the first half of Interview with the Vampire at R's house where we all got scared of Kirsten Dunst as a psycho 13 year old vampire...
*sigh* I love youth...
We're finishing that movie! I wanna see the end!
Childish antics and university OMFG moments and g$ettin a job and Mulroney isn't very nice
Well. I'm getting into the whole university thing now... its kinda scary. Not gonna lie. But I'll get through it, my parents will help and I'll get out of it debt free which is really nice :)
Plus I have my car *_* which makes me happy. So yeah... I was feeling kinda discouraged cuz yeah, university it expensive and difficult but I'll make it work and I'll have a job and babysitting opportunities and scholarships and all will be well :) look out world.
Mulroney needs to remove head from sphincter then speak. Honestly dude, party solidarity ring any bells? You're still a PC right, so act like one!
wedding/packing/Dhalla
The bride and groom both looked great and they were so happy and it was cool...
Course it had to rain blech, but my dress dried and it didn't rain while the bride was outside lol so thats good.
I got the whole reception hall set up thanks to the wonderful relatives and some of the youth so that was good and its exactly what the bride wanted :)
We toasted and danced and blew bubbles and made them kiss and ate and drank and then danced some more. It was good.
Then I got to go home and pack unti 1:30am which really kinda sucked cuz I had to wake up early again the next morning and pack more! But on the bright side my room is pretty much packed so I don't have to worry about that anymore thank goodness.
Ruby Dhalla is having a HORRIBLE week dude. I would NOT want to be her right now. Nuff said.
Roller Skating!
I bailed on my knees like 3 times the first loop around the rink though cuz I was wearing actually roller skates (bad idea) so my knees are turning all sorts of funky colours today.
But S and R and A pulled me up and once I got roller blades it was like 10x better and I didn't fall at all :)
Yay for 70s roller skating (except actually blading :p) I'll bring G one of these days...
bride of chucky
I got lots of French homework done today (yay me) and made virgin mousse (if you know me very well you'll know what that is =p) and went to J's birthday party (happy birthday!). It was a good day.
So you know what sucks? Fairweather friends. They really do. Don't get all excited, I'm not talking about you.
But yeah, I mean if you're going to be friends with someone, make the effort otherwise it really isn't worth it.
I'm so excited for my new church :) there's lots of new youth and tons of girls! Omg is there a ton of girls LOL. I hope the boys in our youth group don't go crazy and scare them away haha that would not be good. But youth is gonna be much more interesting now with all these new people...
Je voudrais les amis qui sont fidèle et réelle dans la nouvelle église. Ne voudrais pas les amis qu'ont deux (ou plus) visages.
Ps the title was just me not wanting to disappoint you guys in my constant quest for wacky titles
I ruined your ENTIRE evening?
Wow. I'm impressed with myself... thats power right there baby.
I didn't know I was able to singlehandedly ruin an otherwise awesome evening by hanging out with some friends for like 2 hours lol.
I guess I just don't know my own strength... I'll have to work on that.
Sorry! ;)
April 1sssssssssssssssssssssssst
Okay so I was all ready to blog:
"OMG guys I'm pregant so I'm turning this blog into a pregnancy themed one where I'll have baby counters and child-rearing tips.
Yay for premarital sex and teen pregnancy!"
Aaaaaaaaaaand then I realized that the only people who read this already know me personally and know that I'm not pregnant...
So April Fools!!!!!!!!!!
